  • Assistant Director

    The Assistant Director advances the mission of the Career Development Center (CDC) by providing expert guidance and innovative career-related advising to undergraduate students and student groups throughout the IU campus. Through a variety of self-assessment tools, acknowledges students where they are and assists them in self-exploration and major decision-making. Works closely with University Division advisors and staff to create relationships necessary to improve effectiveness of major selection and career services on campus. Provides assistance in helping students identify part-time jobs, internships and professional shadowing opportunities. Develops new programming and events to support the needs of University Division students and special populations (international students, underrepresented students, veterans, etc.) at IUB.

     The Assistant Director has three primary areas of responsibilities: one-on-one advising with undergraduate students; assisting students in identifying experiential opportunities to explore career fields and developing networking experiences with alumni, faculty and employers; and developing career-focused events and outreach programs. Completes other Center-wide responsibilities such as supervision of student employees, data tracking and assessment.

    REQUIRED: Master’s degree in higher education and student affairs, college student personnel, counseling, or a related field and two years of experience as a para-professional graduate assistant in career services or with directly-related experience in counseling or career services for college students.

    Combinations of related education and experience may be considered.

    Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills including a team oriented attitude and ability to interact and work effectively with a diverse population of students. Strong organizational and multitasking skills including ability to manage multiple priorities and consistently meet deadlines. Proven ability to listen effectively and synthesize complex information and relations quickly and accurately; and superior attention to detail.

    Preferred:  Professional certifications for counseling or career counseling; certification for the administration and interpretation of psychological instruments (e.g., the Strong Interest Inventory and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator).

The Assistant Director advances the mission of the CDC by providing expert guidance and innovative career-related advising to undergraduate students and student groups throughout the IU campus. 

  • Part-time Reception Staff

    Career Development Center Summer Receptionist 

    20 hours a week, 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.  (Monday-Friday) 

    The Career Development Center Receptionist serves as the primary greeter and host for the center handling both in-person visits and phone calls from diverse constituencies, including but not limited to; university administrators, employers, faculty, students, parents, prospective students/parents, community members and alumni. Specific responsibilities of this position are as listed:

    • Open office each morning and conduct a series of routine maintenance steps to prepare the office environment for the day's scheduled activities (afternoon shift closes the office).
    • Plan proactively for anticipated reception needs specific to employers interviewing in-house; information sessions; classes; classroom visits; staff meetings and training schedules; and trouble shooting last minute changes when needed. Check Symplicity (database) for advising, on campus recruiting and event schedules for the Walter Center and CDC.
    • Utilize Symplicity to check students in for pre-scheduled and drop-in advising appointments; direct student traffic to appropriate waiting area
    • Direct visiting faculty/staff to respective rooms for meetings; contact staff that visitors are here
    • Distribute campus and US mail as well as faxes received through office email account
    • Send Lync messages to respective staff when individuals come to meet with them
    • Provide resources & information for students trying to make advising appointments online
    • Ability to utilize basic office equipment including but not limited to phone, fax, copier, shredder and scanner
    • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential issues maturely and with discretion
    • Report building maintenance issues to direct supervisor in a timely fashion
    • Maintain a clean reception area each day before leaving. Tidy up IDS papers/fliers/handouts and other items in reception area
    • Special projects as assigned

    Skills: Ability to utilize basic office equipment including but not limited to phone, fax, copier, shredder and scanner. Possess a team-oriented attitude with excellent communication and interpersonal skills while demonstrating an ability to work with a diverse population of students.

    Required Education: High school diploma or GED

    Preferred: Bachelor's degree; previous IU experience and knowledge of IU Systems.

We are a student-focused center that provides opportunities for undergraduates to cultivate self-awareness, engage in career and major exploration, and gain marketable skills. By offering comprehensive, high-quality services and opportunities, we aim to help students successfully identify and pursue their academic interests and achieve their career aspirations.

    Graduate Assistants play an integral role in guiding students through the career development process via individual advising, outreach programs and workshops. The assistantship involves the GA in each of these functions as well as projects in other areas of the center. 

    Preference for these positions are given to Higher Education and Student Affairs (HESA) and Counseling students.  

    Requirement: 1st Year Master's students only

    CDC Career Peers

     

    The Career Development Center’s Career Peer Program is a paraprofessional, leadership, and part-time employment opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to directly provide career advising to their peers at IU. Career Peers will serve as Career Development Center (CDC) representatives and provide quality support and outreach for the Center and its constituencies. Career Peers will be required to serve in both on-site and off-site student career advising, participate in CDC outreach and tabling events, contribute to the marketing of CDC events, and provide team member support for special projects. In addition, each Career Peer will have a senior staff member as a mentor to collaborate on personal career goals.

    Skills and Qualifications

    •  Interest, enthusiasm, and passion for advising peers on career planning
    •  Knowledge of the services of the Career Development Center
    • Prior leadership OR advising experience
    • Strong presentation, public speaking, communication, and interpersonal skills
    •  Exceptional time management and reliability
    •  3.0 GPA or above preferred

    Key Responsibilities

    • Promote the Career Development Center’s services to undergraduate students
    • Educate your peers about CDC resources and help them to achieve their career goals
    •  Serve as a trained CDC advisor both on-site and off-site for undergraduate students seeking help and information about career & major exploration, resumes, cover letters, and other career-related topics
    • Represent the CDC at outreach presentations and tabling events around campus on a variety of CDC-related topics (Overview of Services, Resume Writing, etc.)
    •  Research and collaborate in team projects involving career planning for first and second year students
    •  Propose ideas from a student perspective
    •  Assist in the training/hiring of future career ambassadors
    • Communicate personal areas of interest to influence project assignments and opportunities
    • Must commit to approximately 10 hours per week
    • Must attend one day August Career Peer Orientation
    • Must be available for bi-weekly meetings/trainings on Friday mornings (usually 8:30-11 am), as well as events hosted by the CDC
    • Must be able to commit to at least 4 evening outreach presentations per semester
