The Department of Art History offers a rich curriculum on the history and theories of visual cultures. Our topics literally span the globe from Michelangelo to MMORPGs, from the history of paper folding to Islamic manuscript illumination, and from Ancient Crete to contemporary Ghana. Faculty members teach at all levels, class sizes are generally moderate, and there are many opportunities for direct student-faculty contact. Many Art History majors complement their study with a major or minor in another department.
Our majors not only have the chance to work in world-class facilities and with world-class collections, including those in the Eskenazi Museum of Art and the Lilly Library, but also enjoy many opportunities to study abroad. Art History students have received numerous grants from competitive external programs, such as the Fulbright Program.
