The undergraduate degree program focuses on the practical and theoretical preparation of a fitness and wellness professional qualified to facilitate the process of improving quality of life for a continuum of populations through movement and exercise. Students can seek certification through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and work in a variety of physical activity, health and fitness venues. The curriculum is based on evidence-based guidelines and standards developed by the ACSM and other professional fitness and wellness organizations as well as national health agencies (NIH, CDC ect). Students receive a comprehensive science-based background and applied field experience in the areas of physical activity and fitness assessment, exercise prescription and leadership, muscle skeletal movement analysis, nutritional concepts, and behavior change principles related to impacting healthy lifestyles.
Careers for health fitness specialists include personal trainers, group exercise instructors, exercise leaders, club managers, fitness directors, fitness sales professionals, program directors, post-rehab fitness specialists, strength and conditioning specialists, and geriatric or pediatric fitness specialists.
