About this major:
Gender Studies is an interdisciplinary department, engaging students in the study of gender and the intersection of gender with other substantive categories of analysis, including race, sexuality, class, disability, and nationality. Courses in Gender Studies push students to think beyond commonsense understandings of gender as a self-evident form of difference to examine its complex construction in various historical epochs, cultural arenas, and global processes.
As an interdisciplinary field, Gender Studies engages with a wide variety of critical approaches and scholarly methodologies, making it broad in reach, yet unified in its careful attention to an undeniably significant aspect of the human experience. With its strong emphasis on teaching fundamental communication skills, rigorous analysis and interdisciplinary approaches to problem solving, the Gender Studies major prepares students for a broad range of careers and/or advanced study in any number of fields. For high achieving gender studies majors, departmental honors is available.
